Warning when running virtualized (i.e. VirtualBox)
Even when in general FWUL will work fine virtualized in VirtualBox several operations (like flashing a ROM or doing a backup with SALT) require a 100% stable USB connection.
... but Virtualization emulates the USB port and so can never be as stable as connecting to the real port (like running FWUL natively from a stick, sdcard or DVD).
In short: using FWUL in a VM can cause issues you better avoid - and this is not FWUL's fault but normal when using Virtualization + USB.
Regardless of being mentioned in the FWUL thread clearly - many ppl still want to use FWUL in a VM which is ok but it should be more clear that this is a risk.
idea: on login a warning should be displayed similar to this:
FWUL is running virtualized!
Even when in general FWUL will work fine in VirtualBox (no other Hypervisor is supported) it is highly recommended to run FWUL from an USB stick, sdcard or DVD instead. Not only is it faster, most importantly, there can be no problems with the USB virtualization!
So do yourself a favor: when doing critical operations (like flashing a ROM/bootloader) do not use FWUL from within VirtualBox.
This is not a limitation of FWUL but is generally related to virtualization.
